UAC (User Account Control), the most discussed feature of Microsoft Windows Vista, said to be made to be a pain in the ass for it’s users, but most of all needed to be the ultimate layer of security, but is now popping up almost every second of your computing time. Is UAC taking control over you? Is UAC going beyond it’s purpose?
No, the answer is short but clear. UAC does what it is designed for, but only a little to good. I know in Linux world we also have a sort of UAC but much better. In Linux it only pops up when you want to, but this is also thanks to the design of the OS itself, but also thanks to the programs who run on it. So not all UAC pop ups are ‘made’ by Vista itself. When software developers develop better software, UAC pop ups will decrease instantly.
It’s said the software we make still can’t really learn by itself, this would be great in software like UAC. But since this isn’t there we can help UAC a little. The trick is to use Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit, this toolkit can disable the UAC pop ups for certain application, but will still run them in administrator mode with all privileges imaginable.
I’m not going in depth into this toolkit, you can find a tutorial on Vista4Beginners.com.
Although I can see some security holes in the use of this toolkit, I still haven’t fount an exploit making use of it. (this might be a task for me)
