The new Large Hadron Collider (LHC) from CERN has an instrument called the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) will produce as much data as a digital camera with 60 mega pixels taking 40,000,000 pictures a second! This means they have to store and analyse more than a terabyte of data a second across multiple servers on earth. To do so they are building a new network to carry all this data with a speed of more than 10,000 times the speed Internet now has. The Grid it’s called, and no doubt about it that this project will succeed, cause these people also invented the Internet.
This whole new technology based on modern technologies will give the Internet a whole new dimension. With the power of the Grid it is possible to play a game with more than thousands of people online, to download a movie in just a few seconds. But all these ideas are just ‘old’ stuff with a little more speed. The Grid will also give you the power to do more than that. For example: you don’t store your data on your own computer, you just put it on the Grid and have access to it at any time every where. This idea can be enlarged, what about a online operating system. The only thing you have to install on your computer is a simple operating system which connects to the Internet and streams your subsided OS to your computer. If you want to install an application, you just hit a button and maybe enter a serial and it is there for you, ready to use.
There is no doubt about it that the Grid will be our new Internet, we just have to wait a few more years till not only scientist but also normal people can use it, till than we just have to do it with the slow Internet we are using now.

An excellent perspective article, we need more collider updates! Notice: There is a personal CERN LHC - Public Opinion Poll & Debate, at the direct web-link below. Everyone is welcome to attend, but due to malware prevention, must register to Vote or Comment. The objectives of this forum are, to provide a healthy atmosphere for debate, and to create a time-capsule for future generations. The statistic results shall be forwarded to CERN top officials, and even to Stephen Hawking (if his staff will forward to him). The host has placed himself in the role of ‘neutral observer’, to be fair and impartial. The worldwide incoming comments, with the main-body debate statement, become the debate. If you do not vote, then please leave a comment on permanent record. The poll closes October 17, 2008, so pass it on, and get the word out. Thank you for your support, and don’t forget to Vote.
